Coronation Trophy 2017
The annual Gentlemen’s Open Competition for the Coronation Trophy took place on Saturday 3rd June 2017 at Stanton-on-the-Wolds Golf Club under blue skies and a tranquil breeze - perfect conditions for a leisurely stroll around the golf course.
After being played as a Foursomes since the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, the Organising Committee last year deliberated long and hard before agreeing to implement a change to the Four-Ball, Better-Ball MEDAL format, which resulted in the tee-times being completely filled. This year, entries were even higher, with all places from 7.30 in the morning to 3.00 pm being occupied (together with a substantial waiting list).
The Winners :-
The trophy, donated by George Burr (Captain in 1952) was won by formidable father-and-son combination Geoff (Stanton-on-the-Wolds) and Samuel (Worplesdon) Underwood, with a magnificent nett score of 62. The pair (late starters), were aware of a similar score already posted in the Clubhouse and thought they needed a birdie on the last to overtake it. Samuel duly delivered, smashing a drive and 3 metal onto the putting surface, and with Dad urging him not to charge the putt for an eagle, nestled his approach by the side of the hole for the tap-in birdie. Job done, or so they thought - 61 Nett. However when their card was submitted and scrutinised, in their excitement the score had been added incorrectly, and turned out to be "only" a 62. A tie - or was it? Fortunately their dejection turned to euphoria when "the computer" came to their aid and awarded them 1st place by virtue of a countback over the last 3 holes!
2nd place overall :-
Phil Norris & Robert Tigg (SWGC) with a nett score of 62. (also last year's runners-up)
3rd place overall :-
Steve Marlow and Graham Armston (Longcliffe) with a nett score of 65 (on countback over the last 9 holes).
Best gross score :-
was achieved by local Stanton lads Dan Limon and John Jenkins (SWGC) with a score of 69.
Thanks to all the hard preparatory work by Stanton's dedicated Green Staff, the course was in perfect condition with many regulars commenting possibly the best ever. The greens were running fast and true and living up to their reputation of being the best in the County. Feedback from the competitors has been very positive and all those involved in the organisation are to be congratulated and thanked for their contribution (no matter how large or small) to all the day's events.
Many thanks are also due to the 204 entrants from 31 different clubs who supported this year's Coronation Trophy. Keep an eye on the website for next year's entry forms - they should be available towards the end of the year.
Congratulations as well to all the prize winners - we hope to see you again soon.
Annotated full results (Nett by Division, and Gross) are available for downloading.
