Stanton started their 2019 InterClub Mixed Foursomes K/O campaign with a 2nd round match against Newark GC at Radcliffe-on-Trent on Monday 13th May after having received a bye in the first round,
As Dan Limon had injured his back, Tom Bagshaw stepped in to play with the experienced Emma Howie against a strong couple from Newark. As the InterClub Foursomes Knock-out Rules state that the maximum playing handicap of male competitors must not exceed five , and that of female competitors must not exceed eighteen , Tom had to play off 5.
Match 1 - Tom Bagshaw & Emma Howie
Playing off level, Tom and Emma got off to the best possible start in winning the difficult opening hole with a par 4 and had a chance of extending the lead on the 2nd but unfortunately 3 putts led to a half. This pretty much summed up the rest of the game with the Stanton pair playing some very good golf from tee to green but were unable to capitalize on the slow and bumpy Radcliffe greens. The Newark pair holed pretty much everything they looked at and this resulted in Tom and Emma losing by two holes in what was a closely fought match containing some high quality golf from both pairs.
Match 2 - Tom Davies & Jane Harby
Tom and Jane received 2 shots from an experienced couple off 4 and 7 handicaps. They started well, being two up after three, but let their lead slip with missed putts and were 1 down after 6. Using their shot at the 7th, they levelled the score and went through the 9th all square. Both Tom and Jane kept their drives on the fairway, Tom driving long and straight throughout the game. They edged ahead at the 12th using their second shot, but unfortunately struggled with putting on the woolly greens and lost the next 2 holes.
A vital win at the 15th evened up the score, leaving them level with 3 to play, and when Newark drove into the ditch at the 16th things seemed to be looking up, but their 4 handicapper played his shot of the round after dropping in the rough, and hit his driver just short of the green. They chipped and putted for an unexpected 5, and Stanton had to chip out of the trees after their second shot faded into trouble. We couldn't manage a half when yet another putt missed, and the hole was lost.
Tom found the green on the tricky 17th short hole, and we came to the 18th all square. Both Ladies had good drives and Newark just found the green in two. Tom just missed the green on the left, but Jane chipped dead for a solid par, and Newark three putted to leave our pair 1 up after a closely fought game.
Sadly, it wasn't good enough to go through, but thanks go to the Team and supporters who gave it their best shot.
Better luck next year!
