R1 - STANTON vs BEESTON FIELDS
The first round of this season's InterClub Mixed Foursomes took place on 16th April 2018 versus Beeston Fields at Wollaton Park.
It was a coldish windy evening and the course was in good condition considering the recent wet weather. The greens were very slow - entirely different to the pace to which our players are accustomed.
The Club was represented by:-
- Match 1 Gavin Brand & Emma Howie (Stanton) vs Peter Benson and Claire Jones (Beeston Fields).
- Match 2 Anthony Wain & Fran Tunnicliffe (Stanton) vs Stuart Newland and Helen Maber (Beeston Fields).
Gavin and Emma, giving four shots, carried on from their winning form of last year, winning their match 3 UP. After going one down early on they fought back, playing solidly and coping with the slow greens extremely well.
Antony and Fran, a new pairing for Stanton, blended perfectly in their baptism of fire against the "old enemy"! Beeston fought back after being three down with three to play, winning holes sixteen and seventeen. However Anthony and Fran won the eighteenth with a brilliant iron shot from Anthony from under the trees to the back edge of the green. Beeston were bunkered on the left, and that was that! Although giving three shots, the rookies won their match comfortably 2 UP.
Match result: Stanton WON 5 UP
Both matches were absorbing to watch and played in good spirit, with both teams playing some great golf.
Support from Stanton Members was extremely encouraging, and I would like to thank them on behalf of myself and the players.
With last year's momentum and confidence firmly back on track, we are now looking forward to the next round which looks, on paper, to be a toughie - against Notts at Chilwell Manor GC on Monday 14th May starting at 4.30 p.m.
