The Scratch Team comprising:-
- Nick Orchard
- Digby Kite
- Neil Collings
- Tom Davies
- Dan Limon
- with reserve Brad Bainbridge
played their final Notts InterClub League fixture of the season away on Monday 21st August against Wollaton Park.
It was a match that had to be won (and results elsewhere go in our favour) to avoid the vertical drop into the bottom tier - so no pressure!
The course was not in its best condition - the Wollaton green staff having started their course maintenance week, but not withstanding that, the result of the match was somewhat disappointing.
First out of the stalls, not having played for several weeks, Nick performed very well against his younger opponent, but finally succumbed, losing 3 & 2.
Second out was Digby and in a close match, which swung back & forth, he lost 1 down to his young opponent.
Neil and Tom both played well, but went down fighting against their respective big-hitting opponents, .
Dan’s match was an extremely close affair. After having been 2 up with 3 to play, Dan found himself going down the last all square after his opponent had a great chip on the 16th, followed by an equally good bunker shot on the 17th. Dan, however, made of strong stuff, didn’t let this setback unphaze him, and won the final hole to triumph 1 up.
Match result:- Stanton 1, Wollaton 4
For some of the "rookies" it's been a steep learning curve, with the realisation that it doesn't always have to be a sub-par round that gets positive results - a bit of guile and good course management can work wonders. So although we are down, we are certainly not out, and although relegated to the third division next year, I’m confident the Team's fighting spirit will see us promoted on the rebound.
As always, we all very much appreciate the support given on the night.
