Ladies InterClub Foursomes Quarter Finals

QUARTER FINALS

The Ladies InterClub Foursomes Team selected for the Quarter Finals  against Rushcliffe GC at Wollaton Park Golf Club on Monday 29th July was:-

  • Jan Hooley (10) & Louise Spray (12)
  • Fran Tunnicliffe (13) & Di Hardwick (14)
Match 1

The first match saw Jan Hooley and Louise Spray, giving one shot, go quickly into the lead - 3 up after 4 holes. On the 4th Jan put a great shot in and Louise sank the putt producing a birdie whilst giving a shot. This must have been the wakeup call for Rushcliffe as they clawed their way back with back-to-back birdies leaving the Stanton pair one down at the turn. But the Stanton Ladies had lots left in their bag, with a half on the tenth and an easy par on the 11th to go all square. After the 14th Jan and Louise were two up facing the tricky par 5, 15 hole with an added complication - a herd of female deer separated from their off-spring by the fairway. Jan stepped in and corralled the females across the fairway leaving Louise to put an 8 iron into the green just feet from the pin. The rest was history as the pairing knew Stanton had won, and happily halved their way home, winning 3 UP.

Match 2

For former Lady Captain of Wollaton Park Golf ClubFran Tunnicliffe playing in the second match, it was like returning home. Having played there for over 20 years, her inside knowledge proved to be invaluable as she and her partner piled on the pressure against a nervy Rushcliffe pair. Partnered with Di Hardwick, the two stormed to a 7 shot lead by the 10th hole despite having had to give a shot at the 4th. A long putt by Rushcliffe on the 11th pegged them back to just 6 up, but after a series of halves, some excellent course management at 15 took them back to 7 up. A fatal instruction to “aim right” on the 16th saw Di’s drive hit a tree and ricochet out to the left “pinball style”, but despite a valiant attempt to recover, the hole was conceded. With 6 up and just two left to play, the pair were now playing for personal pride, and stamped their seal on the victory winning the last two holes to finish 8 UP.
