The Stanton Ladies set off with high hopes of matching the men who are through to the semi-final as they set off in their third round match against Ruddington Grange at Wollaton Park on Monday 9th July.
The team consisted of
- Jane Harby & Karen Raynor
- Louise Spray & Fran Tunnicliffe
The first pair of Jane & Karen were giving four shots and had to give one at the first hole, so went one down straight away. After four holes, they were three down, having given the second shot, and were struggling to keep up with the steady play of the Ruddington team, as our good shots seemed to find bunkers while our opponents mishit a few shots and got away with it as their balls scuttled along the hard ground, with better results than they perhaps deserved.
The Stanton pair managed to halve the next seven holes, not making any impression on their opponents, until they managed a win on the twelfth getting back to two down. Karen’s tee shot at the 13th found another bunker, and the lack of sand caused Jane to blast out too far, so they slipped back to three down. The Ruddington pair played a text book hole at 15 with a shot, and so we slipped further behind. We found another bunker at 16, but managed a good win on 17 when Karen found the green with her tee-shot, and Ruddington found a bunker at last!
Stanton played the last in great style, with a lovely shot to the green by Karen, and Jane just missed the birdie putt, but Ruddington continued their steady play with another par, and so we finished four down.
The second pair of Louise and Fran had to give six shots, and played well, keeping their opponents within reach, despite being down for most of the match. They fought back to all square with some very good play by Fran, and stood on the last all square.
Unfortunately the Ruddington pair holed a good putt to win the last, so this group finished one down, ending the Stanton hopes and disappointing the stalwart supporters who stayed with them all the way round.
Stanton LOST 5 DOWN
Many thanks to Captain Kevin for caddying and supporting the Team, and to the other Stanton Members who came to watch.
A lovely sunny day on Monday 11th June at Mapperley saw the Stanton Ladies InterClub Team resplendent in their new aqua Mediterranean tops, playing against College Pines in the second round.
The team consisted of
- Jan Hooley & Karen Raynor
- Jane Harby & Louise Spray
- Reserve: Jacquie Gauntley
Jan and Karen, giving six shots, got off to a great start and were soon five up, mastering the tricky greens and handing nothing away to the opposition. They finished a very creditable 7 UP, giving the second couple an easy task.
Jane and Louise, giving nine shots, got off to a good start too, and were soon four up, with Captain Jane chipping in for a birdie at the fourth hole to the delight of the (Stanton) spectators! They slipped back a bit as the sloping greens proved very tricky, and the shots seemed to come too frequently for comfort. Two up at the turn, they hung on, slipping to one up but they managed to win the 16th after both pairs found the bunker near the green.
The opposition drove out of bounds on the final hole, and the Stanton pair put the nail in the coffin with a text book par to finish 3 UP.
Stanton WON 10 UP
A great win for Stanton; many thanks to our two lone supporters Jacquie Gauntley (reserve) and Chris Spray for walking round in the hot conditions.
The next round is at Wollaton Park on July 9th vs Ruddington Grange.
Good luck to the team - any support would be gratefully received!
On Monday 30th April 2018, the Stanton Ladies InterClub Team comprising
- Fran Tunnicliffe & Louise Spray,
- Karen Raynor & Di Hardwick
travelled to Trent Lock to play their first round match against a strong team from Newark GC.
Fran and Louise, receiving two shots, started well, getting ahead of their opponents. However, they slipped back, and despite some good play, they found themselves 3 down with two to play. Fortunately for us, Newark lost two drives on the 17th, and despite our supporters making strenuous efforts to find them, the balls were not found and the hole was conceded.
On the final short hole across water, Fran hit a great shot onto the green, putting the pressure on the opponents who put their shot into the water, allowing our pair to finish just one down.
In the second match, Karen and Di, who had not played foursomes together before, started well and forged ahead of their opponents, who were the same handicaps, hence no shots involved.
Both pairs played some good golf, but our pair managed to keep ahead, and were five up at one point. Despite losing some holes towards the end, they managed to maintain their lead and finished three up, giving Stanton victory.
Thanks go to Karen for giving up her birthday to play for us, (Happy Birthday, Karen!!) and thanks also to the supporters who walked round in the cold, windy conditions, keeping up the morale of the team.
We now look forward to Round 2 - at Mapperley against College Pines on Monday 11th June, tee times 12.40 & 12.50, so Ladies (and Gents!) potential supporters, look out your climbing gear and walking poles in readiness, and come and join us! You will be most welcome.
Stanton won by 2 holes
