Gents' InterClub Foursomes Knockout 2019

Having reached the FINAL last year for the third time in succession, the Gents' InterClub K/O Foursomes Team could be forgiven for thinking it was their year.

However, with a defeat against RETFORD GC by 4 holes, sadly this was not to be.

Looking on the bright side, this year Stanton got off to a cracking start by being awarded a bye to the second round which took place on Monday 10th June against Bulwell Forest at Radcliffe on Trent

Team Selection

The team selected was;-

  • Sam Horsley & Sam Costall
  • Tom Davies & Jon Kisby

The match was played in absolutely atrocious weather conditions with persistent heavy rain accompanied by a chilling northerly wind. It rained for the entire round and the course was bordering on being unplayable due to the amount of standing water. I give great credit to all of the players who sportingly agreed to carry on with the game and I can only admire how they all coped with the conditions and still played on with a smile on their faces.

Match 1 - Sam Horsley & Sam Costall

The two big hitting Sams were giving two shots away to the opposition, but with solid golf all the way round and with a fine birdie, birdie finish, they finished 6 UP.

Match 2 - Tom Davies & Jon Kisby

Tom and Jon, who were not conceding any shots, played the front 9 in level par which was simply incredible golf, and resulted in their being 6 UP at the turn. They then used all of their experience to hold off the opposition on the back 9, winning with a thumping 9 UP victory.

Match result :-

Stanton WON 15 up.

This was sweet revenge for Stanton, as this was the same Bulwell team that had recently beaten us 5 - 0 in the Scratch League away.

Special thanks to Captain Peter Gauntley and Kevin Walden who also suffered the weather to show their support, which was much appreciated by all of the players.

The InterClub Men's K/O Foursomes Team selected for the third round on Monday 1st July at Newark GC v Retford was:-

  • Sam Horsley & Sam Costall
  • Tom Davies & Jon Kisby

This was a re-match of last year's final when we we were defeated by Retford G.C. The match was played in very blustery conditions making finding the fairways a premium.

Match 1 - Sam Horsley and Sam Costall

The two Sams were in receipt of two shots and got off to a strong start, being one ahead after five holes. Unfortunately the wheels then came off and they conceded 8 holes on the trot. They fought on bravely from a difficult situation to lose 6 DOWN.

Match 2 - Tom Davies and Jon Kisby

Tom and Jon were also in receipt of two shots and also got off to a strong start getting to 2 up after 5 holes. They continued to outplay their two young opponents but were unable to capitalise on the greens suffering several 3 putts whilst their opponents holed everything they looked at resulting in losing the game 3 DOWN.

Match result - Stanton lost 9 down.

There was once a very strong support from the Stanton Members, which was much appreciated.
