Mixed InterClub Foursomes Knockout 2017

SECOND ROUND

On Monday 15th May, Stanton played their second round Mixed InterClub Foursomes match against Coxmoor Golf Club at Wollaton Park.

Representing Stanton were:-

  • Charles Banks & Karen Raynor,
  • Gavin Brand & Emma Howie

with reserves Fran Tunnicliffe and Tom Davies.

Both teams played exceptionally well in very windy conditions.

I can still see the smile as Karen holed a monster putt on the seventeenth to gain a half. Charles was very relieved and gave her a big hug!

Charles & Karen giving 4 shots finished one down, and with Gavin & Emma giving 2 shots winning two up - a very closely fought match ensued - Stanton winning by one hole.

Congratulations must go to both sides for producing such good golf that was played in an excellent spirit.

Once again - thank you to all the supporters for making the journey down the A52.

THIRD ROUND

In the third round we were drawn against Serlby Park GCwho had defeated Oakmere Park 5 up at Coxmoor Golf Club. The venue was Worksop Golf Club and the date Monday 17th July.

The team comprised:-

  • Charles Banks & Karen Raynor
  • Tom Davies & Jane Harby .
  • with reserves Sam Costall & Fran Tunnicliffe.

Players and spectators alike enjoyed a lovely warm evening for golf on a course in excellent condition, and with both sides having plenty of support it was always going to be a contest to savour.

Charles and Karen finished one up, with Charles holing a long and vital putt on the 18th to ensure their win.

Although Tom and Jane lost one down (being two down with a hole to play), Tom also holed a long putt to win the eighteenth which ensured a play-off consisting of three holes per team.

Charles and Karen got off to a flying start on their first two extra holes but lost the third, hence Stanton finished one up.

Our supporters really got behind Tom and Jane and both responded with positive putting to halve the first two holes. On the last hole - a par three - Jane played a super tee shot to about ten feet. Serlby missed the green and made four. We calmly two putted and won the hole, finishing one up.

Overall result:-

Stanton won two up over the six play-off holes.

Both teams participated in an exciting match which could have gone either way. Thanks once again to all the supporters and the encouragement given, which all the players very much appreciated.

SEMI-FINAL

The Team selected to contest the Mixed InterClub Foursomes semi-final vs Worksop GC at Oakmere Park on Monday 7th August was:-

  • Gavin Brand & Emma Howie
  • Tom Davies & Karen Raynor

Players and spectators alike enjoyed a lovely evening for golf on a course in excellent condition, with Stanton having plenty of support it was always going to be a good contest against tough opposition.

Gavin & Emma, giving 5 shots, finished one up, winning the 18th finally to beat their strong opponents. This match swung one way and then the other throughout the 18 holes.

Although Tom and Karen, receiving 1 shot, lost four down, they were trying to recover the lost holes over the final closing holes, having been down from the start.

Worksop Captain (Bill) made use of his buggy to ferry several of our lady supporters around the course, including our President & Lady Captain (clearly enjoying that as much as the golf!) and the ladies were certainly grateful for not having to climb up some very steep hills.

Our large number of supporters really got behind both pairings, but on this occasion, Worksop proved just too strong for us.

Players and supporters from both teams joined together in the bar afterwards for a drink, and we wished Worksop well in the final.

Overall result:-

Stanton lost 3 down

Commiserations to the Team on the final result, but congratulations on reaching this stage of the competition.

Thanks once again to all the supporters and the encouragement given, which all the players very much appreciated.
