The annual prestigious Gentlemen’s Foursomes Medal open competition for the Coronation Trophy took place on Saturday 6th June 2015 at Stanton-on-the-Wolds Golf Club.
The trophy, donated by George Burr (Captain in 1952) to commemorate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, was won by Stanton's very own king of comedy Stuart Walker and his playing partner Gary Shenton from Lingdale, with a nett score of 72.5.
2nd place overall :-
Nick Orchard & Grenville Wills (SWGC) with a nett score of 73.5
3rd place overall :-
James Varney & Paul Sanders (SWGC) with a nett score of 75.
Best gross score was achieved by James MacLachlan & Mick Layton (Stanton) with a score of 80, closely followed by last year's Scratch Prize Winners Digby Kite & Jonathan Kisby (Stanton) who also scored 80, but were beaten on count-back.
Thanks to all the hard preparation work by Stanton's dedicated Green Staff, the course was in near-perfect condition, although windy conditions and firm greens contributed to some higher scoring than usual this year. Nevertheless a most enjoyable day was experienced by all those who took part. Local knowledge was clearly an important factor, as the winners' list comprised many Stanton stalwarts!
These events don't just happen - they are the result of many weeks' pre-planning and organisation. We are especially fortunate to have procured the services of Mr Paul Keeling, our new Club Manager who, together with his closely-knit team, was instrumental in making his first Stanton Open Event run like clockwork. Long may it continue!
Many thanks to the 168 entrants from 39 different clubs who supported this year's Coronation Trophy, and congratulations to all the prize winners - we hope to see you again next year.
